Orientation Week: A Beginning or Just Another Programme?

Every semester, orientation week welcomes a new generation of students to Midlands State University. From Monday, 27 up to Thursday 30 July 2026, the MPH and lecture halls across MSU’s campuses are echoing with presentations, advice and words of encouragement. Yet amid the excitement, one question lingers: are students simply attending orientation, or are they preparing for the journey that lies ahead?

Orientation is often dismissed as a routine exercise before lectures begin. Some students attend because they have to, while others skip sessions altogether, convinced they already know enough. But can anyone truly navigate university life without first understanding the environment they have chosen to join?

The value of orientation extends far beyond campus tours and welcome speeches. It is where students discover the support systems, opportunities and networks that could define their university experience. A single conversation during orientation may lead to a lifelong friendship, a leadership position or even a future career.

Yet orientation should not escape criticism. Universities must ask whether traditional presentations still resonate with today’s students, whose attention is shaped by fast-moving digital platforms. If the message is important but the delivery fails to engage, has orientation achieved its purpose?

Students, too, have a responsibility. University is not a place where success is handed out with a student card. It belongs to those who ask questions, seek opportunities and intentionally become part of the community around them.

Perhaps the greatest misconception is that orientation ends on Thursday. In reality, every lecture, society meeting, sporting event and interaction becomes part of the orientation process. The most successful students are often those who never stop learning how to belong.

As this semester's Orientation Week draws to a close, the challenge shifts from the University to the student. Will this week become a forgotten memory, or will it become the foundation of a remarkable university journey? After all, orientation is not about finding your way around campus; it is about discovering who you will become while you are here.
