From Masvingo to the Bar

For Brian Takunda Chiduku, completing a Bachelor of Laws Honours degree is more than an academic milestone; it is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream forged in resilience and unwavering.

Growing up in Masvingo, Brian developed an early passion for law, inspired by a strong desire to stand for justice and give voice to the vulnerable, especially those with disabilities. That dream, however, came with significant challenges. Being visually impaired, Brian’s educational journey demanded resilience, determination, and unwavering self-belief.

“When I was growing up, I knew law was what I wanted to pursue,” Brian shared. “I understood that my visual impairment would make the quest difficult, but I never allowed it to define my limits.”

When he enrolled at the #universityoffirstchoiceforall in 2021, Brian found not only an institution of academic excellence, but also a supportive environment, a university of first choice, that recognised ability beyond disability.

Through the MSU Disability Resource Centre, he received academic and psychosocial support that enabled him to adequately participate in his studies.

“The support I received from the Disability Resource Centre made a huge difference,” he explained. “They ensured I had access to all relevant learning materials and the assistance I needed.

At MSU, I felt seen, supported, and respected.” Despite the demands of a rigorous law programme, Brian remained focused, determined, and disciplined throughout his studies.

His journey stands as a powerful testament to MSU’s commitment to inclusive education and student success. “MSU gave me more than a degree,” indicated Brian. “It gave me confidence. It showed me that, especially when it comes to academic affairs, disability does not mean inability.”

As he prepares to take the next steps in his legal career, Brian hopes his story will inspire other young people—especially those with disabilities—to pursue higher education without fear or hesitation.

“To anyone considering applying to university, I would say: do not let your circumstances discourage you,” he said. “If you are willing to work hard, I would recommend you go to Midlands State University. MSU will support you.”

Midlands State University continues to empower students from diverse backgrounds through accessible learning, dedicated support services, and quality education.

Applications for the August intake is currently open, offering prospective students the opportunity to begin their own transformative journeys.
